Hostel Life Costs More Than Students Expect Sometimes
BMSCE Management Quota Fees is usually the first number students search, but honestly the hostel and other extra charges also become a big part of the total cost. Many students realise this only after admission discussion starts.
Because tuition fees is one thing… but living in Bangalore for four years adds its own expenses.
And Bangalore is not exactly a cheap city either.
Hostel Fees Per Year
If a student chooses to stay inside the campus hostel, the yearly hostel cost is roughly around ₹2.18 lakh to ₹2.24 lakh per year including accommodation and food charges.
The hostel package usually includes room rent and mess charges together. For example, around ₹1.45 lakh goes for accommodation and roughly ₹73,000 to ₹79,000 for food depending on veg or non-veg mess option.
So overall it becomes a little above ₹2.2 lakh annually for most students staying in the hostel.
At first many students think hostel will be cheap like school hostels… but engineering college hostels in big cities are usually more expensive.
Different Hostels For Boys And Girls
BMS College of Engineering actually has multiple hostel buildings for both boys and girls inside the campus. Some hostels have single rooms while others offer twin or triple sharing rooms depending on availability.
First-year students are often placed in specific hostel blocks reserved for freshers, while senior students sometimes move to other units in later years.
So the room type and hostel building can slightly change the experience.
But fee range mostly stays similar.
Mess Charges Are Compulsory
Another small rule many students don’t know before joining — if you stay in the hostel, joining the mess is compulsory.
Basically the hostel system is designed so that every student living there eats in the mess. Students cannot opt out of it and cook separately.
The mess offers both vegetarian and non-vegetarian meal plans, and the food cost is already included in the hostel fee package.
Some seniors joke that hostel food becomes the “true engineering survival training.” Sometimes good… sometimes average… depends on the day honestly.
Other Additional Charges Students Pay
Apart from hostel and tuition fees, there are some additional charges that students may need to pay during the academic year.
For example, universities sometimes revise VTU academic fees, and if any changes happen the students need to pay the revised amount separately.
Transport charges may also apply for students who use college transport services.
Then there are smaller academic expenses like lab materials, exam fees, project costs, and sometimes club or event participation fees.
None of these are extremely big individually, but over four years they slowly add up.
Kind of like ordering food online… the main price looks normal, then suddenly delivery fee, tax, platform fee all appear.
Engineering life also has similar small surprise expenses.
Total Living Cost Over Four Years
If someone stays in hostel for the full engineering course, the hostel expenses alone may reach around ₹8 lakh to ₹9 lakh for four years.
And this is separate from the BMSCE Management Quota Fees that students pay for tuition.
So when families calculate the full cost of studying in BMS College of Engineering through management quota, they usually combine tuition fees, hostel fees, and personal expenses together.
Only then the real total becomes clear.
That’s why many seniors advise students to check not only the tuition amount but also the living cost in Bangalore before making the final admission decision.
